FARNEY: SBOE SHOULD HAVE SOUGHT AG OPINION FIRST – AND SHOULD PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Statement by Dr. Marsha Farney

"Last Friday’s vote by the State Board of Education to proceed with consideration of funding Charter School facilities using the Permanent School Fund gives me concern for several reasons. The action was contrary to the advice of the Board’s financial counsel. Also, there is a substantial question whether the action was within the Board’s authority, a question the Attorney General will need to decide. As there is a reasonable possibility that the Attorney General will conclude the Board lacks such authority, I believe it would have been more prudent to first seek that opinion before proceeding."

"I do applaud the efforts of the Board to be innovative in seeking a solution to this problem. I am a strong supporter of Charter Schools, and indeed all public schools. I would recommend we continue to work with the House and Senate Education Committees to find a solution to the facility funding needs of our Charter Schools. If I become a Board member, I would intend to work closely with these committees and my Senator and good friend, Senate Finance Chairman Steve Ogden, to seek a real solution to the issue of Charter School facility financing."

"If the Attorney General were to conclude that the Board has a role to play in this area, I still believe the Board should consider the matter with caution. Our focus should be to take care that 100% of the Permanent School Fund investments are always working to receive the highest investment return for the public school children of Texas. If I am elected, I will certainly do everything I can to make that happen."

We Won! Now on to November!

April 14th, 2010

Dear Friends:

My family and I want to say “thank you” to each of you for the tremendous support that was demonstrated in yesterday´s election. We took our message to our fellow Republicans and Conservatives and they answered with a resounding “yes.”

I´m both humbled and exhilarated by yesterday’s victory. This was a whirlwind campaign, as I filed for this office in late December and had to call on so many of you to do so much in a very short period of time. After we all take a brief pause to catch our breath, I´ll be calling on you again for your support to help finish the job in November.

I want to reach out to those who supported my opponent and assure you that it is our desire to focus on what unites us in our conservative beliefs and values rather than any difference of opinion we had in the primary election. We must move forward and unite as conservative Republicans so we can soundly defeat the Democrats in the general election this November.

On behalf of Bryan, Ashley, Bryan Paul and Drew, thank you again for all you have done for us and for your friendship to the Farney family. I look forward to seeing you all on the campaign trail this fall.

Warmest regards,

- Marsha
